University of Oklahoma Interim President Joseph Harroz Jr. announced the new “We Are” initiative at Wednesday’s board of regents meeting, outlining a new approach the university will take in talking about diversity.
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion says that the “We Are” initiative is one that will focus on an individual as well as a collective commitment to defining the university’s approach to diversity.
The goal of the “We Are” campaign is to bring groups together and redefine the community as one that promotes positivity and acceptance.
“And so the idea is that we are talking about who we are as an institution. So that if another racial incident happens we’ve already established who we are and what our culture is on campus. So that we are not constantly defining who we are not.” – Dr. Teara Lander, Director of Campus and Community Engagement
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion will be holding a town hall meeting on September 24th to engage with the student body and gather feedback on the new initiative.
