For the first time ever the Food and Drug Administration has approved a prescription drug made from cannabis.
This new drug is called Epidiolex, and patients who suffer from Dravet syndrome, Lennox–Gastaut syndrome, and certain types of epilepsy are eligible to use it. It has also been proven to reduce seizures by 26 percent. Epidiolex is a twice daily oral solution and can be taken by patients that are two years old and older.
After taking more than five years to get approved, this cannabis based drug hits the shelves today. Although costly and only available through prescription, most insurance plans are expected to cover it.
