Controversial Sculpture Faces Removal

A sculpture recently added outside Gaylord Memorial Stadium may not be around much longer.

The covered wagon was introduced to OU’s campus last week as a donation from an alumnus.

On Monday, however, OU student Abigail Lee created a petition asking for the removal of the piece due to sculptor Tom Otterness’ controversial past.

In the petition, she mentions how in 1977 Otterness adopted a dog from a shelter, tied it up and shot it for a film he was working on.

“Battery Park denied his work, San Francisco Art Commission denied his work, the whole city of Lincoln, Nebraska denied his work. I guess I didn’t know why it was good enough for us but not good enough for many other places.”

The petition already has over 1700 signatures.
