YWCA unveils new emergency shelter

A greater number of women and children who suffer the horrors of domestic abuse now have a place to escape the violence.

The Oklahoma City YWCA opened the Thelma Gaylord Emergency Shelter this week, a safe haven for abused families.

The enlarged and improved shelter can now accommodate 120 women and children – that’s more than twice as many as last year.

Oklahoma ranks third in the nation for women killed by men, and Oklahoma City is first in the state.
